Sarah (Sally) McAninch, b.ca.1810, in Kentucky, was the oldest daughter of Samuel McAninch (and his first wife, name unknown); Sarah (Sally) married George Hancock, 12 Mar. 1840, in Hendricks County. George had (at least) five children from a previous marriage (William, George S., Polly, Elizabeth, and Nancy Hancock), and then George and Sally had only one child together, daughter Samantha Hancock, born ca.1841. George Hancock died 26 July 1840 [Sally (Sarah) Hancock, Petition for Dower, 1843] [9]. |

Sarah (Sally) (McAninch) Hancock is still alive in August 1845 (court records), and she probably died shortly before March 1847, when her will was presented in court [Hendricks County Will Book 4˝ p.441] [9] [30]. It is not known exactly when Sarah (Sally) died, but, she is not on the 1850 census. It is also not known where she was buried [30a], and there are no Hancock burial records before 1880 in the Hendricks County cemetery records [5]. |

In 1843, a John Hancock was appointed guardian for Sarah (McAninch) Hancock’s daughter, Samantha Hancock, as well as guardian for the older Hancock children in the probate of George Hancock's estate, when Sarah (Sally) (McAninch) Hancock petitioned for her dower rights [9] [30]. In February 1849, a John Hancock was one of the five Trustees of the M. E. Church [20]. This may or may not be the same John Hancock. |

In the 1850 census, Samantha Hancock, only child of George and Sally (McAninch) Hancock, was enumerated with her grand-father Samuel McAninch [10], along with Mary E. " [ditto, Hancock?], age 4, and John W. " [ditto, Hancock?], age 2; however, John is believed to be John Wesley Mann, not Hancock [30c] [31] [50]. And, “Samantha Hancock (who later married Robert McClellan) was left an orphan when she was only a few weeks old. She was cared for by her aunts, Betsy and Amelia McAninch, and grew to womanhood in their home.” [44] |
