Robert McAninch, b1848, Mississippi Infantry

1848

Robert McAninch was born in 1848, Mississippi (prob. DeSoto Co.), fourth son and fourth

child of John H. and Nellie (Cooper) McAninch, and youngest brother of J. H. McAninch.

1850

In the 1850 Census, the father John H. McAninch, age 25, (occ) carpenter, b.Tenn., his wife

N. (Nellie Cooper) McAninch, age 20, b.Tenn., and their four sons - James Henry (J. H.),

age 5, b.Tenn., Samuel, age 4, b.Miss., Charles, age 3, b.Miss., and Robert, age 2, b.Miss. -

were living in the Northern Division of DeSoto County, Miss., on 26 Sept. 1850           [3]

1860

The probable composition of the family in the 1860 census would have been -

John H. McAninch (father), age ~35; without his wife Nellie, believed died 1850-1859; and

the four sons J. H. (James) (Henry) McAninch, age 15, Samuel, age ~14, Charles, age ~13,

and Robert McAninch, age ~12. The Census records for 1860 have not been found.       [5]

1862

Robert McAninch first served with (A. K.) Blythe's Battalion, Mississippi State Troops,

which was organized in May 1862 under the order of Mississippi Maj.-Gen. T. C. Tupper

from militia companies recruited in Calhoun, DeSoto, and Amite counties. [29]

1863

44th Mississippi Infantry Regiment - initially known as 1st Battalion, Mississippi Infantry,

then (A,K.) Blythe's Regiment, the name was changed to the 44th Regiment in June, 1863.

The 44th Mississippi Infantry was active at Shiloh and Munfordville, then was assigned to

J. P. Anderson's, Tucker's, and Sharp's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. It served with the army

of Murfreesboro, fought with Hood in Tennessee, and saw action in North Carolina. [30]

Robert McAninch was a Private in Company L of the 44th Mississippi Infantry Regiment

(Mustered In as a Private, and Mustered Out as a Private)                                       [8] [31]

1860s

Unfortunately we could not find any records for this Robert McAninch after the Civil War,

and he may not have survived the war.

1860s

Another Robert McInch/McInich (probably McInch or McNinch, not McAninch) can be

found in the 27th Mississippi Infantry, organized in 1861 from independent units from the

counties of Oktibbeha, Leake, Covington, Jasper and Simpson in Mississippi . . .

(five central and southern Mississippi counties, a long way south of DeSoto County in

northern Mississippi, on the Tennessee state line) [32]
