First Generation: Daniel McAninch, b.ca.1750, northern Ireland (prob. Co. Antrim), across

Pennsylvania, into Greene Co., eastern Tennessee, through Cumberland Gap to Lincoln Co.,

Kentucky, and then south to Giles Co., Tennessee (probably died there ca.1822). [Note 1]

Second Generation: Henry McAninch, b.1802-1804, (prob. Lincoln Co.) Kentucky, son of

Daniel and (mother’s name unknown), went to Giles County, Tennessee, age 16-18 in the

1820 census there. Married Elizabeth (maiden name unknown), ca.1820-1821, children:

son Samuel D. McAninch, b.1821-1823, to DeSoto Co., Miss., mar. Sarah Jane Hartsfield;

son John H. McAninch, b.1824-1825, also went to DeSoto Co., Miss., mar. Nellie Cooper;

daughter Mary E. McAninch, b.March 1829, died 10 July 1829, Giles County, Tennessee.

Wife Elizabeth and daughter Mary E. are buried at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Giles Co., Tenn.

Third Generation: John H. McAninch, b.1824-1825, Tennessee (prob. Giles Co.), son of

Henry and Elizabeth McAninch. John H. (age ~20) married Nellie Cooper, b.1829-1830, in

Tennessee, married ca.1844 (Nellie age ~15), probably in Giles Co., Tennessee. They went

west to DeSoto County, Mississippi, with John H’s father Henry McAninch (b.1802-1804),

John H. McAninch’s brother Samuel D. McAninch, and many other McAninch families.

John H. McAninch and his family went to DeSoto Co., Mississippi, probably traveling in

the winter of 1845-1846, and their other children were probably born in DeSoto Co. [2]

J. H. (James Henry) McAninch, Tennessee and Mississippi

James Henry McAninch was born in August 1845, in Tennessee (prob. Giles County),

son and first child of John H. and Nellie (Cooper) McAninch. Their other three children -

Samuel b.1846, Charles b.1847, and Robert b.1848 - were probably born in DeSoto Co.

J. H. McAninch was known mostly by his initials "J. H." during his adult life (1870 census,

both marriages, Lee County Tax Lists, his obituary, and on his cemetery marker); his name

"Henry" is on the 1850 census (so, his parents probably called him "Henry"?), and names

"James" and "James H." are recorded in the 1900 and 1910 census records, respectively.

In the 1850 Census, the father John H. McAninch, age 25, (occ) carpenter, b.Tenn., his wife

N. (Nellie Cooper) McAninch, age 20, b.Tenn., and their four sons - James Henry (J. H.),

age 5, b.Tenn., Samuel, age 4, b.Miss., Charles, age 3, b.Miss., and Robert, age 2, b.Miss. -

were living in the Northern Division of DeSoto County, Mississippi, on 26 Sept. 1850.  [3]

Many other McAninch families came west from Kentucky via Giles Co., Tennessee, and

four other families were living in the Southern Division of DeSoto Co. in the 1850 census

(the Southern Division, land south of the Coldwater River, including the town of Coldwater,

will later become part of the new Tate County, Mississippi, when it is created in 1873).  [4]
