Cemetery Identification and Information:

PV001, North Burial Ground, Providence, North Main St, “20 ft. W of tele. pole # 140”, and

“North Burial Ground dates to 1700 and is now 110 acres. It is the oldest surviving burial ground

in Providence. It was recorded from 1856-1879 by Frank Williamson. His 5600 name transcript

is in the Arnold collection. F. T. Calef recorded 7500 names in 1923. Since February 1994, these

transcripts have been checked and updated. In 4 1/2 years, 35,000 inscriptions in roughly 40 acres

have been recorded. Almost 700 Civil War veterans have been identified in this cemetery. These

transcripts are important since no records are available for this cemetery from 1700-1848.”

WY008, River Bend Cemetery, Westerly, Beach St., “10 ft. W of tele. pole # 2768”, and

WY009, St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly, Rock St., at 'A' St., “25 ft. of tele. pole # 7520” [sic]

“Rev. Frederic Denison published 116 cemeteries he recorded in Westerly and its Witnesses in

1867. In the early 1980's, 68 of these cemeteries were located and registered. 25 of these have

been checked and updated. A volunteer has recorded River Bend Cemetery. This data is being

checked against a prior transcript which will result in a very complete record of this cemetery

dating back to 1850. Dwight and Anna Brown have also recorded and published River Bend. For

more information on these volumes, contact Dwight at buster@riconnect.com. 74 cemeteries have

been registered to date, with an estimated total of 85 thought to still exist. Of 17,000 estimated

marked graves in Westerly, 16,272 have been entered in the database. Westerly is 96% complete.”
