From Swan Creek to Lotts Creek, The Saga of the German-American Walter Clan ... A Family History and Genealogy, prepared by Dora Swigart Bennett, Mount Ayr, Iowa, June 1, 1981 [Ringgold County, Iowa]. |
[32a] |
Dora (Swigart) Bennett, and her sister Cleta (Swigart) Dickson, are both grand-daughters of Enoch George McAninch (1824-1910) and Aruanah (Araunah?) [60] (Knighten) McAninch (1841-1914), and great-grand-daughters of Samuel and (Mary) Polly (Skidmore) McAninch. |

In the ‘Swan Creek to Lotts Creek’ book, page 49 begins with the paragraph: |
“At the time Mrs. B. M. Lesan was preparing the manuscript for her book Early History of Ringgold County [published 1937], she invited my sister Cleta to submit a history of both the Isaac Swigart and Enoch McAninch families. Cleta interviewed my father and mother and developed these two historical essays [before 1937] which I am including here” [1981]. |
There follows a page about Isaac Swigart (p.49), and then the page about Enoch McAninch (p.50). The ‘Swan Creek to Lotts Creek’ book [1981] adds the three ‘correction’ paragraphs (p.50) [32c] and the picture of the tombstone of Isabelle Ridpath, which is not included in the Early History of Ringgold County book [B. M. Lesan, 1937]. |
[32c] |
‘correction’ at the end of the “Enoch G. McAninch family” article in the 1981 book (p.50): |
“There is an error in the McAninch narrative. Additional information developed since that time [since 1937] reveals that Isabelle Ridpath, who was married Jan. 1, 1852[,] first wife of Enoch McAninch, either did not come to Ringgold County[,] or if she did come to Iowa, she returned to Indiana where she died June 2, 1860[,] and was buried with their only child in the Methodist Hill Cemetery south [sic] of Stilesville, Ind. |
A picture of her gravestone was provided by Kenneth McAninch of Indianapolis, Ind. The cemetery has since been bulldozed out of existence. |
Kenneth McAninch is a descendant of Elisha McAninch, an older brother of Enoch McAninch” (pg.50) [32d, analysis] [32e, south] [32f, photo] [32g, caption] [32h, Kenneth] |
[32d] |
Cleta (Swigart) Dickson, after interviewing her mother, Eva (McAninch) Swigart, before 1937, wrote the part about "Mrs McAninch & baby died soon after coming to Iowa". In 1981, Cleta's sister Dora (Swigart) Bennett added the published ‘correction’ three paragraphs about Isabelle in Indiana. [32c, correction] (analysis by Rosalie Eben Schack) [9] |
[32e] |
(Old) Pleasant Hill Methodist Cemetery is north of Stilesville, and south of Coatesville |
[32f] |
photo on pg. 50 in the book appears to be the same as the photograph taken by Louise McAninch in 1963 [4a2] (“Isabelle” photo, see Appendix 4, below). |
[32g] |
photo on pg. 50: photo caption in the book: “Gravestone of Isabelle Ridpath, first wife of Enoch G. McAninch, and daughter of J. and S. Ridpath. Died June 2, 1860, at the age of 27 years, 11 months, and 14 days. Buried in Hendricks County, Indiana.” |
[32h] |
believed to be Kenneth Lee McAninch (1903-1981), buried Stilesville Cemetery, Hendricks County; son of Harvey A. McAninch (1874-1946), grand-son of Asbury McAninch (1837-1878), g-g-son of Elisha McAninch (1815-1898), g2-g-son of Samuel and (Mary) Polly (Skidmore) McAninch. |
[32i] |
“Enoch and Araunah [sic, Aruanah?] (Knighten) McAninch were married March 21, 1862. |
They were parents of nine children:” |
“1. Mary E., Born May 1, 1863, died Aug 27, 1866.” |
“2. Clara, born Feb 3, 1865, died Feb 6, 1865. Both are buried in the Shaha Cemetery in Poe twp., Ringgold Co. Iowa.” ‘Swan Creek’ book, pg. 51 [Clara, 32j] [analysis, 32k] |
[32j] |
Clara McAninch is believed to be incorrect in the ‘Swan Creek’ book [1981] [32], since Clara is buried in the (Old) Pleasant Hill Methodist Cemetery, in Indiana [1] (number 2): |
“Clara McAninch / died Feb. 6, 1865 / dau. of E. G. & C. A. McAninch / aged 2 ds.” |
[32k] |
so, in 1981, evidently Dora was not aware that Clara had been born and buried in Indiana, or, maybe she knew about the Indiana burial, and thought that it was Isabelle's child instead of Aruanah's (Araunah?) child; either is a possibilty. (comments by Rosalie Eben Schack) [9] |
