The Editor's Corner |
The Newsletter frequency has been converted to 'semi annual' this year, for 2014 and the future, |
with an updated masthead above, and we will try to produce 'spring' and 'fall' issues next year , |
and for the foreseeable future, as long as there is enough new McAninch material to publish. |
Although we know that our genealogy is never really done, the early McAninch immigrant lines |
have been traced back to early Pennsylvania (and eastern Canada) (and all Ulster Scots, from |
northern Ireland), and there is a lot of genealogy work to do on many of my other family lines. |
Computer System and Software Changes in 2014 |
Two new Windows 8.1 computers this year (one for me, and one for my wife's business), and |
wrangling lots of new software installations, have seriously changed the production 'tool chain' |
used to write and publish this Newsletter. Both of our old Windows XP systems are history |
(one hard-drive boot sector failure, and the other has old software that could not be updated), |
and we are now running new LibreOffice database, word-processing, and spreadsheet software, |
along with the old Dreamweaver MX website software installed in a 'compatibility box' mode. |
Fortunately, we did not lose any data (USB drives, off-site backup, Google Drive in the cloud), |
And, just to add to the complexity of everything this year, my genealogy database program |
TMG (The Master Genealogist) has been discontinued, frozen at its current TMG 9.04 version. |
Most of us TMG users are currently planning to continue using it as long as possible, while |
keeping a 'weather eye' open for possible alternatives in the near future. |
