Elias Grimes was born 19 July 1818, in Stokes County, North Carolina, and married Sarah (Salome) Phillips, daughter of John Samuel Phillips and Sally (Salome) (Sarah?) Sides (Seitz?) (see Phillips, below); Sarah was born 29 Sept. 1815, in North Carolina. Elias Grimes was the son of John H. Grimes (1779-1855) and Mary Pike (1784-1867), and the grand-son of Nathan Pike (1749-1791) [35] (and, see McAninch and Pike sections, below). Elias and Sarah had nine children, with the first three named on the 1850 census: Anna M., age 6; William H., age 2; and Mary Jane, age 1 [33]; additional children shown on the 1860 census include John W., age 14; Susannah, age 8; Samuel, age 6; Elias, age 4; Sarah, age 2; and an “infant” daughter, age 10/12 [sic], believed to be Lucinda Alice Grimes, born circa 17 July 1860, age 1/12 [not 10/12] when the census was taken on 26 July 1860. In 1849, Elias Grimes was one of the five Trustees of the Pleasant Hill M. E. Church [20]. After Samuel McAninch died, in July 1859, Elias Grimes was also one of the three Commissioners appointed by the Hendricks County Court in the settlement of Samuel’s estate, which resulted in the land partition recorded in February 1861 [27]. In January 1861, probably in conjunction with the land settlement, the Probate Court appointed Elias Grimes as Guardian to John W. Mann, daughter of William and Hannah (McAninch) Mann (see Mann family, below) and Guardian to Sarah Harlan, daughter of John S. and (Mary) Polly Susan(nah) (McAninch) Harlan (see Harlan family, below) [36]. |
