VII. Tracing the Physical Growth of the Cemetery, 1847-1868, in Five Phases |

The chronological record of burials in the cemetery can be analyzed in five distinct phases: |
|
1. |
1847-1848, McAninch-Pike ‘family cemetery’ created for two children; |
|
|
[Feb. 1849: Land donated for the Pleasant Hill Methodist Episcopal Church and cemetery] |
|
2. |
1851, four new graves were added, including the first adult, Sally Phillips; |
|
3. |
1853-1855, three new graves added, two infants, and Polly S. (McAninch) Harlan; |
|
4. |
1859-1860, five new graves, including Isabelle (Ridpath) McAninch and Samuel McAninch; |
|
5. |
1864-1868, five new graves extend the cemetery at both ends, now total of 19 (known) graves. |

The growth of the cemetery can be seen clearly in the five phases diagrammed below; in each phase, the new graves are shown with their death dates, to make it clear which new graves have been added in each phase. The specific grave identification numbers “1 to 8, 8b, and 9 to 19” are used here, from the sketch map found in the Phillips Estate papers [1]. |
