V. The Pleasant Hill Methodist Episcopal Church

This pioneer Pleasant Hill Methodist Episcopal Church was probably organized about 1832 [22] [23a]. Although no ‘church records’ have been found, many of the family names associated with this church can be found in the land records of the Pleasant Hill area, and in these cemetery records, or deduced from other county records, including these pioneer Hendricks County surnames: Bryant, Grimes, Hadley, Hancock, Harlan, King, Mann, McAninch, Phillips, Pike, Ridpath, Smith, and Tincher.

The Pleasant Hill Methodist Episcopal Church served families located in four different townships --

1.

Franklin Township, Hendricks County; the Pleasant Hill location is north-west of the present-day village of Stilesville;

2.

Clay Township, Hendricks County, north of Franklin Township, includes present-day villages of Coatesville and Amo;

3.

Liberty Township, Hendricks County, the next township east of Franklin Township; and

4.

Adams Township, in Morgan County, the next township south of Franklin Township, and south of present-day Stilesville (Stilesville is in Franklin Township, Hendricks County).

There were many family events during the 1830’s and 1840’s that were probably connected with this church community, which probably held their meetings in the various family homes. Samuel’s last two children, Arminta (born 26 Feb. 1833) and William S. (born 5 Mar. 1835), were both born here, in Indiana, and (speculation) could have been baptized in this Methodist Episcopal church community.
