III. B. Why are there only 13 or 14 names on the ‘short list’?

And, of course, the question of why there are so few names (only 13) on the original hand-written list, found at the Indiana State Library [3a1]? And the same 13 names appear on the Indiana State Library typed list [3b]? Additionally, the updated fourteen-name ‘short list’ [5g] [5h] includes the addition of Anna M. King, wife of John King, per the “Mark Accas, 1977” correction [3a2].

This compressed chart shows the relative locations of the 14 graves on the updated ‘short list’ --

Interestingly, both the earliest (known) burial, Margaret A. Pike, 1847, and the last known burial date, John King, 1868, are recorded on the original hand-written ‘short list’ [3a1]. Also, it is clear from this chart that the original ‘short list’ covers the entire physical extent of the cemetery, from the Charles W. McAninch grave, diagonally across to the John King burial.

The other graves that are not on the ‘short list’ appear to be grouped in two places in the cemetery --

5

Oliver Harlan

6

Sarah C. McA.

10

Infant Hadley

11

Lucinda A. Grimes

These five are all children (in chronological order) --

[1] 6.  Sarah C. McAninch, died Dec. 18, 1848, infant;

[1] 5.  Oliver Harlan, died Aug. 20, 1851, age 2;

[1] 10. infant daughter Hadley, died Feb. 3, 1855, infant;

[1] 3.  Hiram D. McAninch, died Jan. 18, 1859, age 2; and

[1] 11. Lucinda A. Grimes, died Nov. 27, 1866, age 6.

Two of these graves, Oliver Harlan and Hiram D. McAninch, were observed as late as 1963 [4b].

It is possible that the other children were just buried in their ‘family plot’s, without an individual or ‘permanent’ marker, and some may have been remembered only in the family records (for example, Sarah C. McAninch, born and died on Dec. 18, 1848, in the Family Bible of Daniel McAninch) [4f].
