In the 1800's, northern California was the center of activity on the west coast, with the |
|
Mexican territorial capital at Monterey, the natural harbor at San Francisco, the gold rush in |
|
the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and the building of the transcontinental railroad. |
|
|
|
Although founded on the 'Mission trail' in 1781, and incorporated in 1850 (the same year that |
|
California became the 31st state in the union), Los Angeles only began to grow significantly in |
|
the later years at the end of the 1800's, with early City Directories first published in the 1870's. |
|
|
|
The Los Angeles Public Library has collected many of the city and street directories, and many |
|
more local directories are also available online, as described in the Source Notes (p.2015-25), |
|
with directories from various years (e.g. telephone books) scattered among multiple repositories. |
|
|
|
The McAn~, McIn~, and McN~ (-inch/-ish) listings found in Los Angeles and other related |
|
directories between 1897-1987 have been listed chronologically in this article, with most of the |
|
different families identified with additional information in the People and Family Notes section. |
