Indiana to Iowa: William Skidmore McAninch (1835-1901) -- |
William S. McAninch, born 5 March 1835 in Indiana, was the youngest son of Samuel and Polly |
(Skidmore) McAninch. His full name, William Skidmore McAninch, has been reported by two of his |
Kansas descendents, brothers Wayne E. Bailie, in Kansas, and Jack (John) Bailie, now in Texas. |
Charles Franklin and Mina (McAninch) Higgins are great-grand-parents of Wayne and Jack Bailie. |
William Skidmore McAninch and Mary M.(Maria?) Johnson were married 1 Feb. 1859, Hendricks |
County, Indiana. Their first child, daughter Elmina Alice “Mina” McAninch, was born 25 Dec. 1859 |
in Indiana, and was baptized in 1863 at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Coatesville, Indiana. |
Mina married Charles Franklin Higgins, 17 Oct. 1882, at the home of the groom, in Kellerton, |
Ringgold County, Iowa. Charles went by 'Frank', a shortened version of his middle name. He clerked |
in the A. H. Teale Co. store for many years, then opened his own grocery store in Kellerton in 1890. |
In 1889 he was elected City Councilman [Kellerton info from Rosalie Schack CGRS Owatonna Minn.]. |
Before 1893 they moved to the Des Moines area (Berwick, now part of Des Moines, would have been |
its own town back then). Mina (McAninch) Higgins died 4 Dec. 1943; Charles ‘Frank’ Higgins died |
31 Dec. 1948; both are buried in Berwick, Polk County, Iowa [Jack Bailie has pictures of their marker]. |
